Maximo Laura
The Artist
Maximo Laura is an award-winning tapestry weaver from Ayacucho, Peru. Laura is a fifth-generation weaver having learned his craft as a child from his father. He developed his art through internal self-exploration and external exploration of the world, including a lifelong study of art history and literature beyond the borders of Peru. Today, he is internationally recognized as one of South America's preeminent and most unique textile artists. His work is the integration and synthesis of ancestral weaving techniques, symbols, memories, myths and rituals. He utilizes contemporary art and color in order to create incredible masterpieces, while maintaining the historical integrity of this ancient craft.
The Tapestries
Tapestry designs are first conceived and painted by Laura and then transformed into a line drawing before going onto the loom. The base material for Maximo’s tapestries is alpaca wool. To give the tapestry multiple dimensions and textures, wool is added in certain parts of the design to give the tapestry its modern-day pop. Finding the perfect color is a meticulous process of blending and testing different colors of wool together. Blending is done depending on the designs and the desired color effect. Once everything is finalized, the tapestries are then hand woven by skilled artisans in Maximo’s workshop. The tapestries are done under the supervision of the artist himself, to ensure each piece is of the utmost quality. Each Maximo Laura tapestry is one of a kind. Because of this, authentic tapestries are hard to come-by and only sold in a few places. Galeria Latina is the only and first brick and mortar shop to partner with Maximo for over 25 years. We hand-select all of the Maximo Laura products sold at our store to ensure that each piece meets the highest of standards.
